Teatro Massimo opened in 1897 after more than two decades of construction, built in a heavy neoclassical style with a domed auditorium, and remains the largest opera house in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Its scale reflected Palermo's ambitions at the height of the belle époque, when the city's elite sought a cultural landmark to match those of northern Italian and European capitals.
The theatre's more recent history is considerably less glamorous: it closed in 1974 for what was meant to be a routine restoration and remained shut for twenty-three years amid delays, mismanagement and outright scandal, becoming a notorious symbol of civic dysfunction before finally reopening in 1997. Its exterior steps gained international recognition through their appearance in the closing sequence of The Godfather Part III, filmed shortly before the theatre's long-delayed reopening.
