Construction on the Torre dei Lamberti began in 1172, commissioned by the Lamberti family, and the tower was raised in stages over the following centuries, which is why its upper and lower sections show visibly different building phases and materials. At roughly 84 metres, it remains the tallest structure in central Verona, rising directly from the corner of Piazza delle Erbe.
The tower shares its building with the Achille Forti gallery of modern art, a combination that lets a single visit pair Verona's medieval civic architecture with a collection of more recent regional painting — an efficient pairing rather than an obvious thematic one, but a practical bonus for visitors climbing up anyway.
