The chapel was commissioned and largely redesigned in the 18th century by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero — an alchemist, inventor and Freemason whose reputation for occult experimentation attached itself firmly to the building he left behind. He gathered a group of sculptors to fill it with allegorical funerary monuments unlike anything else surviving from the period.

The centrepiece is Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ, carved in 1753: a marble figure of the dead Christ shown under a marble shroud so thin and closely draped that it appears translucent, revealing the body beneath in detail that seems to defy the material. Legend long held that di Sangro had somehow chemically "petrified" real fabric — untrue, but a measure of how implausible the carving still looks in person.

The chapel is very small, and timed entry slots are strictly capped, which is why it sells out — book several days ahead, more in high season.
Photography is not permitted inside, in keeping with the chapel's status as consecrated space.
Visits are self-paced but brief — there isn't much floor space, and most visitors move through in well under an hour.
